    Nowadays my research is focussed on the study of the genetic control of floral zygomorphy in Compositae from an evo-devo perspective. This is part of the project “Origin and evolution of morphological novelties in plant lineages. An evo-devo approach”. We aim to identify in Compositae the genes involved in the early development stages of inflorescence, presumably the CYC-like genes (cycloidea) orthologs, and study their expression pattern. The systems selected are the genera Anacyclus and Matricaria (Anthemideae), both including species with radiate (zygomorphic florets) as well as discoid capitula (actinomorphic florets). Besides, we pretend to produce a phylogeny for these and other related genera based on CYC-like genes. In this project, which principal investigator is Javier Fuertes Aguilar, we are collaborating with Pilar Cubas (CNB).

    In addition, I’m collaborating in other projects aimed to clarify phylogenetic relationships at different taxonomic levels within Asteraceae, these are tribal (Senecioneae), generic (Pentacalia, Andryala, and Hieracium), infrageneric (Senecio Section Crociseris), and infraspecific levels (Senecio carniolicus).
