Self guided tours: The evolution of the plant kingdom

Charles R. Darwin thought up the first ever evolutionary tree in 1859. A few years later (1866) the German biologist, Haeckel, drew the first tree of life. One hundred fifty years ago, Darwin’s Theory of Evolution opened up a world of possibilities for research into the processes whereby new species emerge. Currently, the
phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequences and other molecular markers are providing us with much more detailed information about the relationships between the various groups of animals and plants and the evolutionary pathways they have followed over the course of history.

The Royal Botanical Garden invites you on a journey through time showing you the most important events in the evolution of the plant kingdom and the most representative morphological characteristics of each group, as a result of the evolutionary conquests plants have made during their history.
