Annual, glabrous throughout; fertile stems few, (8-) 18-60 cm, more or less erect, simple or branched above; sterile stems 0-5. Leaves of fertile stems 15-50 x 0.5-8 mm, linear to oblongelliptic, acute to subacute, flat, 3-verticillate below, alternate above; leaves of sterile stems elliptic, acute to subacute, opposite or 3-verticillate. Inflorescence with (2-) 10-30 flowers, somewhat lax in flower, lax in fruit. Bracts 2.5-6 mm, ovate, acute, usually magenta-tinged. Pedice1s 5-9 mm in flower and fruit, free. Calyx-lobes more or less equal, 3.5-4.5 x 1.1-1.5 mm, lanceolate or lanceolate-ovate, acute, acuminate, or rarely obtuse, the margin scarious, usually purplish-tinged. Style deeply bifid. Corolla 18-23 mm, deep blue, violet or pale mauve, rarely pink; adaxial lip sinus 2.5-3 mm; abaxial lip sinus 2.5-3 mm; spur 10-12 mm, curved, somewhat exceeding rest of corolla. Style deeply bifid. Capsule 3-4.5 x 2.8-4 mm, ovoid, searce1y emarginate, glabrous; loculi equal, each loculus dehiscing by 3 (-5) teeth. Seeds 0.5-0.7 mm, reniform to pyriform, transversely ridged, dark grey to black; transverse ridges 7-10, obtuse to subacute, discrete or rare1y anastomosed; periclinal wall of testa-cells verrucate, the margin raised, produced into angular marginal papilla towards ridge-apex, the median papilla absent or occasionally present, small, rounded, more or less isodiametric.
