Glaucous perennial, glabrous except for inflorescence, reproducing vegetatively by root-buds; fertile stem usually solitary, 30-35 cm, ascending to suberect, strict, simple or sometimes branched from base, densely leafy below, sparsely leafy above; sterile stems rarely present. Leaves of fertile stems 35-45 x 1.5-2 mm, the length 20-35 x breadth, linear or filiform, acute, the upper with revolute margins, attenuate, alternate. Inflorescence with 5-16 flowers, lax in flower and fruit. Bracts 1.5-3 mm, linear, acute. Pedicels 3-5 mm in flower and fruit, erect. Calyx-lobes more or less equal, c. 3 x 1.5 mm, lanceolate to oblong, obtuse, glandular-pubescent. Corolla 20-22 mm, bluish-violet with darker veins, the adaxial lip intense violet, the tube with orange markings; spur 9-10 mm, c. 1 mm broad at base, slender, somewhat curved, more or less equalling rest of corolla. Capsule 5-6 x 5-6 mm, globose. Seeds c. 2 x 1 mm; disc smooth. Modified from Sutton (1988).
