Glaucous perennial, glabrous except for inflorescence, propagating vegetatively from adventitious root-buds; fertile stems 1-several, 25-60 cm, decumbent to suberect, usually simple, densely leafy below, more or less leafless above, sometimes secund; sterile stems not seen. Leaves (l0-) 15-45 (-60) x 0.5-1.5 (-2) mm, the length (8-) 15-30 x breadth, filiform or linear, acute, the margins involute below, flat above, attenuate, somewhat fleshy, occasionally scale-like below, alternate. Inflorescence with 2-18 flowers, subcapitate in flower, dense in fruit, the axis glandular-pilose. Bracts 1.5-3 mm, linear-elliptic, acute. Pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm in flower and fruit, erect, villous above. Calyx-lobes subequal, (3-) 3.5-5 x (0.8-) 1.2-2 mm, elliptic or oblong, acute to subobtuse, glandular-villous throughout or towards base, the margins narrowly scarious, white or tinged with reddish-purple. Corolla 15-17 mm, yellow with violet veins or tinged with violet, glabrous externally; tube 3.5-5 mm broad at mouth; adaxial lip sinus 0.4-0.9 mm; abaxial lip sinus 0.5-1.4 mm; spur 4-6.5 mm, 0.8-1.2 mm broad at base, straight, shorter than rest of corolla. Capsule 3.5-6 mm, subglobose, glabrous. Seeds 2.7-3 mm, reniform-orbicular, blackish-grey; wing 0.5-0.8 mm broad; disc elongate-reniform, smooth. Modified from Sutton (1988).
