Linaria - Linaria parviracemosa - Taxonomy

Linaria parviracemosa D.A. Sutton, sp. nov.

Linariae virgatae (Poiret) Desf. affinis, a qua inflorescentia paucioriflora, calycis lobis plerumque longioribus, corollis cremeis tubo longiore differt; a Linaria triphylla (L.) Miller foliis angustioribus, inflorescentia paucioriflora, pedicello in statu fructifero longiore, capsulis seminibusque parvioribus differt.

Herba glabra; caules fertiles 1-7,9-20 (-29) cm longi, decumbentes vel erecti, basi simplices aut ramosi; caules steriles 0-2. Folia caulium fertilium 3-15 (-19) x 3-5.5 (-9) mm, obovata vel late elliptica, apice subacuta vel obtusa interdum mucronulata, basi cuneata, margine plana, basin versus 3-5 in verticillo disposita, apicem versus alternata; folia caulium sterilium similaria sed basin versus opposita, apicem versus 3-5 in verticillo disposita. Inflorescentia floribus 2-7 (-12) praedita, in statu ftorenti densa, in statu fructifero fere laxa. Bracteae 3.5-6 mm longae, linearioblongae, obtusae. Pedicellus erectus, in statu ftorenti 1-2.5 mm longus, in statu fructifero 2.5-4 mm longus. Calycis lobi inaequales, lineares vel oblongo-spathulati, apice obtusi vel subacuti, margine anguste scariosi interdum purpurascentes; lobus adaxialis 5.5-7.5 (-9) x 0.9-1.1 mm, lobi abaxiales 4-5.5 (-6) x 0.8-1.3 (-2) mm. Corolla 22-27 (-29) mm longa, cremea, palato aurantiaco, tubo maculis 2 luteis notatis, calcari albo vel purpureo, tubo lato, sino labii adaxialis 2.5-3.2 mm alto, sino labii abaxialis 1.8-2.5 mm alto, calcari 10-13 mm longi, recto, corollae parte relicta subaequanti vel eandem parum superanti. Capsula 4-5 x 3.84.5 mm longa, ovoidea, glabra. Semina 1.1-1.3 mm longa, irregulariter trigona, alveolata vel ruminato-foveata, angulis acutis vel obtusis sine crista, nigra; hilum submedianum vel e base 0.3 longitudinis positum, angustum; paries periclinalis cellularum testae valde concavus verruculosus, haud papillatus.

Glabrous annual; fertile stems 1-7,9-20 (-29) cm, decumbent to erect, simple or branched from base; sterile stems 0-2. Leaves of fertile stems 3-15 (-19) x 3-5.5 (-9) mm, obovate to broadly elliptic, subacute, obtuse or sometimes mucronulate, cuneate, ftat, 3- to 5-verticillate below, alternate above; leaves of sterile stems similar but opposite below, 3- to 5-verticillate above. Inftorescence with 2-7 (-12) flowers, dense in flower, becoming more lax in fruit. Bracts 3.5-6 mm, linear-oblong, obtuse. Pedicel erect, 1-2.5 mm in flower, 2.5-4 mm in fruit. Ca1yx-lobes unequal, linear to oblong-spathulate, obtuse to subacute, narrowly scarious, occasionally becoming tinged with purple; adaxial lobe 5.5-7.5 (-9) x 0.9-1.1 mm; abaxial lobes 4-5.5 (-6) x 0.8-1.3 (-2) mm. Corolla 22-27 (-29) mm, whitish-yellow, the palate orange, the tube with 2 yellow marks, the spur white or purple; tube broad; adaxial lip sinus 2.5-3.2 mm; abaxial lip sinus 1.8-2.5 mm; spur 10-13 mm, straight, subequalling to somewhat exceeding rest of corolla. Capsule 4-5 x 3.8-4.5 mm, ovoid, glabrous. Seeds 1.1-1.3 mm, irregularly trigonous, the margins acute to obtuse, without longitudinal ridge, the intervening faces alveolate to ruminate-foveate, black; hilum submedian to 0.3 distance from base, narrow; periclinal wall of testa-cells deeply concave, verruculate, not papillate. Modified from Sutton (1988).
