Linaria polygalifolia Hoffmanns. & Link, Fl. Port. 1(8): 248, tab. 44 (1811).

Glaucous, somewhat fleshy perennial, glabrous or occasionally sparsely glandular-pubescent in inflorescence; fertile stems 4-11, 10-30 (-45) cm, simple or branched; sterile stems usually absent. Leaves of fertile stems flat, attenuate or cuneate, subsucculent, mostly alternate, the lowermost sometimes in whorls of 3-4. Inflorescence with 2-10 flowers, dense in flower and fruit. Bracts 3-4.5 mm, linear-lanceolate to narrowly oblong-spathulate, subacute. Pedicels 1-3 (-8) mm in flower and fruit, erect. Calyx-lobes unequal; adaxial lobe 4-9 mm; abaxial lobes 3-6 mm. Corolla 20-31 (-36) mm, deep yellow with orange-brown veins; tube (4.5-) 5-6 mm broad; adaxial lip sinus 1.2-2.5 (-4) mm; abaxial lip sinus 1-2 mm; spur 10-20 mm, 2-2.5 mm broad at base, straight or somewhat curved, equalling or exceeding rest of corolla. Capsule 6-8 mm, globose, glabrous. Seeds 2.5-3.5 mm, orbicular or suborbicular, concavo-convex; hilum narrow; wing thin, smooth, grey, becoming whitish and membranous towards margin; disc reníform, smooth, without tubercles or papíllae, dark grey; periclinal wall of testa-cells convex­tabular, verrucate, the anticlinal walls of testa-cells sinuate with conspicuous ridge over junction. a. Linaria polygalifolia subsp. polygalifolia.

Fertile stems decumbent to ascending. Leaves 3-10 (-16) x 0.6-1.5 (-2) mm, narrowly oblong­spathulate to linear-oblanceolate, subacute. Calyx-lobes linear-spathulate or narrowly oblong, obtuse to subacute; adaxial lobe 0.8-1.2 mm broad in flower, 1.3-1.8 mm broad in fruit; abaxial lobes 1-1.2 mm broad in flower, 1.5-1.8 mm broad in fruit. Seeds 2.5-3.3 mm; wing 0.5-0.8 mm broad.

b. Linaria polygalifolia subsp. lamarckii (Rouy) D.A. Sutton, comb. et stat. nov.

 Basionym: L. lamarckii Rouy, Naturaliste (Paris) ser. 1 2(44): 351 (1883).


Fertile stems aseending or suberect. Leaves 3-15 x (1.5-) 2-7 mm, oblong-spathulate to obovate, usually obtuse. Calyx-lobes oblong-spathulate, obtuse; adaxial lobe 1.2-1.5 mm broad in flower, (1.8-) 2-2.5 mm broad in fruit; abaxial lobes 1.5-1.8 mm broad in flower, (2-) 2.5-3 mm broad in fruit. Seeds 2.9-3.5 mm; wing 0.9-1.2 mm broad.

2n = 12 (Valdés, 1973: 212; Viano, 1974: 327; Fernandes and Queirós, 1971: 360; Fernandes, Queirós and Santos, 1977: 46).

This taxon is often cited as a Portuguese endemic (Chater, Valdés and Webb, 1972) but recent collections from the province of Huelva (Carbajo and Chiscano, 1979) have demonstrated that ir occurs over the border in southern Spain.
