Somewhat glaucous annual; fertile stems usually numerous, decumbent to ascending, rarely erect, simple or occasionally branched; sterile stems 0 (-5), procumbent or ascending. Leaves of fertile stems obtuse or rarely acute, attenuate, alternate or rarely opposite above, 3-verticillate below; leaves of sterile stems similar but smaller, opposite or 3-verticillate. Inflorescence with (1-) 5-25 (-40) flowers. Bracts leaf-like. Pedicels accrescent, becoming reflexed or recurved in fruit. Calyx-lobes equal or subequal, usually increasing in width in fruit. Capsule more or less globose. Seeds reniform or reniform-trigonous, not laterally compressed; hilum subbasal to submedian, narrow; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular or tabular-convex, verrucate or rugulate, that of cells from interstices or base of ridges or tubercles usually with median or marginal papilla.
