Annual, glabrous throughout or rarely sparsely glandular-pubescent in inflorescence; fertile stems 1-5 (-30), 18-65 cm, ascending to erect, much branched or sometimes simple; sterile stems 0-10 (-25), procumbent to ascending. Leaves of fertile stems (6-) 10-48 x 0.4-1.3 mm, linear or filiform, obtuse, flat, alternate or lowermost sometimes 3-verticillate; leaves of sterile stems linear to elliptic, obtuse, 3- or 4-verticillate. Inflorescence a raceme or panicle, individual branches with 3-12 (-25) flowers, lax in flower and fruit. Bracts 1.5-4 (-11) mm, linear, obtuse. Pedicels 3.5-10 (-33) mm in flower, 6-17 (-36) mm in fruit, erecto-patent or rarely suberect, free. Calyx-lobes subequal, 3-5.5 x 0.7-1.1 mm, linear-lanceolate, acute, green, the margin broadly scarious, white or tinged with purple. Corolla 16-27 (-30) mm, bright yellow; adaxial lip sinus 2.5-3 mm; abaxial lip sinus 0.5-1 mm; spur 7-12 (-15) mm, straight, more or less equalling rest of corolla. Style deeply bifid. Capsule 3-5 x 2.4-4.5 mm, oblong, glabrous; loculi more or less equal, each loculus dehiscing by 3 teeth. Seeds 0.6-0.7 mm, reniform-triquetrous, transversely ridged, dark grey; transverse ridges 4-6, low, rounded, discrete or rarely anastomosed; periclinal wall of testa-cells densely verrucate or rugulate, the margin not raised except for rounded marginal papilla towards ridge-apex, the median papilla occasionally present, small, rounded, more or less isodiametric.
