Linaria - Linaria supina - Taxonomy

Linaria supina (L.) Chaz., Suppl. Dict. Jard. 2: 39 (1790).

Glaucous perennial, sometimes biennial or annual, glabrous except for glandular-pubescent inflorescence; fertile stems often numerous, 5-30 (-40) cm, procumbent to ascending, more rarely suberect, usually simple; sterile stems usually numerous, procumbent to aseending. Leaves of fertile stems attenuate; leaves of sterile sterns similar to those of fertile stems but somewhat smaller and in whorls of 3-6. Inflorescence with 2-12 (-27) flowers, dense in flower, somewhat lax in fruit Bracts 2-11 mm, linear to linear-oblanceolate, acute. Pedicels 0.5-4 (-9.5) mm in flower and fruit, erecto-patent. Calyx-lobes unequal or rarely subequal, subacute to obtuse; adaxial lobe (4-) 4.5-8 x 0.5-1 mm in flower and fruit, linear-oblanceolate to linearspathulate; abaxial lobes 2.5-6 x 0.8-1.5 mm in flower and fruit, oblanceolate to oblong oblanceolate. Corolla pale yellow, occasionally with purp1e or greenish-grey veíns, rarely tinged violet; tube 3-4 mm broad; adaxial lip sinus 2-4 mm; abaxial lip sínus 1.5-3 mm; spur 1.5-2 mm broad at base, slender or rarely stout, somewhat curved, usually exceeding rest of corolla. Capsule 3-6 mm, globose, glabrous or rarely glandular-pubescent. Seeds suborbicular, plano-convex or somewhat concavo-convex; hilum narrow; wing 0.3-0.6 mm broad, thin, smooth, not papillate, black or rarely dark grey; disc somewhat reniform, smooth or tuberculate, not papillate, black, occasionally metallic-shiny, the tubercles sparse and rounded, rarely more dense and acute; anticlinal walls of testa-cells angular with low ridge over junction. Modified from Sutton (1988).

a. Linaria supina subsp. supina.

Perennial or rarely annual; fertile stems numerous or few, ascendíng to suberect, more rarely procumbent. Leaves offertile stems 5-20 (-32) x 0.5-2.5 (-4.5) mm, linear to linear-oblanceolate, acute or subacute, flat or rarely revolute, in whorls of 3-6 below, alternate above, usually equally distributed around stem. Inflorescence with (2-) 6-12 (-27) flowers, dense in flower, somewhat lax in fruit. Corolla (13-) 17-25 (-27) mm; spur (6.5-) 9-13 mm, usually exceeding rest of corolla. Seeds 1.7-2.8 (-3.3) mm; disc smooth or with sparse, rounded tubercles, the tubercle length 0.2-0.8 x width; periclinal wall of testa-cells convex-tabular with prominent margins, smooth or sparsely verruculate.

2n = 12 (Heitz, 1927a: 51; Valdés, 1973: 212).

b. Linaria supina subsp. duriaeana D.A. Sutton, subsp. nov.

A Linaria supina (L.) Chaz. subsp. supina praecipue foliis plerumque alternis secundis, basin caulium versus aggregatis, calcari corollae partem relictam breviore, seminibus tuberculis densis acutis differt.

Herba perennis; caules fertiles numerosi, procumbentes vel interdum ascendentes. Folia caulium fertilium 3-12 (-20) x 0.3-1.2 (-2.2) mm, linearia vel linearo-subulata, apice acuta, margine revoluta, alterna aut basin versus 3-4 in verticillo disposita, plerumque densa secunda. Inflorescentia floribus 1-6 praedita, in statu fiorenti fructiferoque densa. Corolla 15-23 mm longa, calcari 6.5-10 mm longi, corollae parte relicta breviore. Semina 2-2.5 mm longa, disco tuberculis densis acutis, 1-2.5plo longioribus quam latioribus; paries periclinalis cellularum testae tabularis, dense verruculosus.

Perennial; fertile stems numerous, procumbent or sometimes ascending. Leaves of fertile stems 3-12 (-20) x 0.3-1.2 (-2.2) mm, linear or linear-subulate, acute, revolute, alternate or sometimes in whorls of 3-4 towards base, usually dense and secund. Inflorescence with 1-6 flowers, dense in flower and fruit. Corolla 15-23 mm; spur 6.5-10 mm, shorter than rest of corolla. Seeds 2-2.5 mm; disc with dense, acute tubercles, the length of tubercle 1-2.5 x width; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular, densely verruculate.
