Linaria - Linaria tuberculata - Taxonomy

Linaria tuberculata D.A. Sutton, sp. nov.

Linariae oblongifoliae (Boiss.) Boiss. & Reuter affinis, a qua pedicello in statu fructifero saepe breviori, calcari pro ratione breviore, corollae partem relictam plus minusve aequanti, sed praecipue seminibus parvioribus, disco tuberculis densis elongatis, differt.

Herba glauca, praeter inflorescentiam glabra; caules fertiles numerosi, 4.5-l3 cm longi, decumbentes vel ascendentes, simplices; caules steriles plerumque numerosi. Folia caulium fertilium 5-15 x 0.7-2.5 mm, linearia, apice obtusa vel subacuta, margine parum revoluta, basi attenuata, carnosula, plerumque alternata vel eadem infima 3-7 in verticillo irregulari disposita; folia caulium sterilium similaria sed foliis caulium fertilium parviora, 3-7 in verticillo disposita. Inflorescentia floribus 2-14 praedita, glanduloso-pubescens pilis multicellularibus dispersis, parietibus transversalibus rubris, in statu florenti fere densa, in statu fructifero elongata. Bracteae 2-5 mm longae, lineares, apice obtusae vel subacutae. Pedicellus erectus, in statu florenti 0.5-1 mm longus, in statu fructifero 1.5-2.5 mm longus. Calycis lobi subaequales, 2.7-4 x 0.4-0.9 mm, lineares vel oblanceolati, apice acuti, margine peranguste scariosi. Corolla 14-16 mm longa, lutea, tubo angusto, sino labii adaxialis 0.6-1.6 mm alto, sino labii abaxialis 0.7-1.2 mm alto, calcari 7-8.5 mm longo, gracili recto, corollae parte relicta plus minusve aequanti. Capsula 3.5-5 mm longa, globosae, glabra. Semina 1-1.2 mm longa, reniformo-orbicularia vel suborbicularia, plano-convexa vel parum concavo-convexa; hilum perangusti; ala 0.25-0.4 mm lata, membranacea laevis haud papillata, alba; discus reniformis, dense tuberculatus haud papillatus, fuscus, tuberculis longis acutis, cineraceis vel albis; paries periclinalis cellularum testae convexo-tabularis, laevis; parietes anticlinales cellularum testae angulares, juncturis intercellularibus cristatis.

Glaucous annual, glabrous except for inflorescence; fertile stems numerous, 4.5-l3 cm, decumbent to ascending, simple; sterile stems usually numerous. Leaves of fertile stems 5-15 x 0.72.5 mm, linear, obtuse to subacute, somewhat revolute, attenuate, slightly fleshy, mostly alternate or the lowermost in irregular whorls of 3-7; leaves of sterile stems similar but smaller and in whorls of 3-7. Inflorescence with 2-14 flowers, glandular-pubescent with scattered multicellular hairs with red transverse walls, somewhat dense in flower, elongating in fruit. Bracts 2-5 mm, linear, obtuse to subacute. Pedicel erect, 0.5-1 mm in flower, 1.5-2.5 mm in fruit. Calyx-lobes subequal, linear to oblanceolate, 2.7-4 x 0.4-0.9 mm, acute, very narrowly scarious at margin. Corolla 14-16 mm, yellow; tube slender; adaxial lip sinus 0.6-1.6 mm; abaxial lip sinus 0.7-1.2 mm; spur 7-8.5 mm, slender, straight, more or less equalling rest of corolla. Capsule 3.5-5 mm, globose, glabrous. Seeds 1-1.2 mm, reniform-orbicular to subor-bicular, plano-convex or somewhat concavo-convex; hilum very narrow; wing 0.25-0.4 mm broad, membranous, smooth, not papillate, white; disc reniform, densely tuberculate, not papillate, blackish-grey, the tubercles long, acute, pale grey or white; periclinal wall of testa-cells convex-tabular, smooth; anticlinal walls of testa-cells angular with ridge over junction. Modified from Sutton (1988).
