Glaucous, glabrous perennial; fertile stems numerous, 40-150 cm, erect, robust, simple or branched above; sterile stems usually absent. Leaves of fertile stems 10-70 x 2-10 mm, the length (4-) 6-8 x breadth, linear-elliptic to lanceolate, acute to obtuse, flat, attenuate, alternate. Inflorescence with 15-100 flowers, dense in flower, dense or somewhat lax in fruit. Bracts 2-13 mm, lanceolate, acute. Pedicels erect or erecto-patent; 2-4 mm in flower, 3-10 mm in fruit. Calyx-lobes subequal, 2.3-4.5 (-9) x 0.8-1.3 mm, linear-lanceolate to narrowly deltate, acute. Corolla 17-24 mm yellow, usually tinged and veined with red or brown; tube 6.5-9 mm broad; adaxial lip sinus 2-2.5 mm; abaxial lip sinus 0.4-1.2 mm; spur 7-13 mm, 1.5-2.5 mm broad at base, straight or somewhat curved, more or less equalling rest of corolla. Capsule 3-7 x 3.5-5.3 mm, oblong-ovoid, distinctly emarginate, glabrous. Seeds 0.7-1 mm, crescent-trigonous to tetrahedral, black; longitudinal marginal ridges 0.05-0.1 mm high, acute, sometimes incomplete, the intervening faces tuberculate or with short, laterally compressed ridges, frequently in rows parallel to marginal ridges; periclinal wall of testa-cells verrucate to reticulate, tabular or tabular-convex, that of cells from interstices or ridge-bases usually papillate, the papillae narrowly conical, acute.
