Linaria - Linaria virgata - Taxonomy

Linaria virgata (Poiret) Desf., Fl. Atl. 2: 41, tab. 135 (1798).

Glabrous annual; fertile stems erect or ascending, branching from base, scarcely above; sterile stems occasionally present, procumbent. Leaves of fertile stems flat, attenuate or cuneate, 3 or 4-verticillate below, alternate above; leaves of sterile stems similar but usually smaller, 3-verticillate. Inflorescence usually dense in flower, becoming lax in fruit. Bracts 1.5-8 mm, oblong or linear, acute or subacute, deflexed. Pedicels 0.5-1 mm in flower, 1-3 mm in fruit, more or less erect. Calyx-lobes unequal, oblong to lanceolate. Corolla reddish-purple or lilac, occasionally pink or white, with tube marked with yellow; spur slender, straight or somewhat curved forwards. Capsule glabrous. Seeds irregularly tetrahedral, the margins acute or obtuse, without longitudinal ridge, the intervening faces somewhat coarsely ruminate-alveolate or ruminate-foveate, blackish-grey or black; hilum subbasal, narrow; periclinal wall of testa-cells concave with prominent margins, not papillate, verruculate to rugulate. Modified from Sutton (1988).
