Epixiphium - Taxonomy

 

 

Galvezia Dombey ex Juss., Gen. Pl.: 119 (1789). Shrubs; stems homomorphic, erect or ascending, the branches rarely cirrhous. Leaves homo- morphic, simple, entire, more or less pinnately veined, petiolate, 3-verticillate below, opposite or the uppermost alternate; petioles not cirrhous. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate, in termi- nal, lax, leafy racemes. Floral leaves not subtending additional branches. Pedicels slender, sinuate or deflexed in fruit, rarely cirrhous. Calyx deeply divided; lobes subequal, entire, valvate, entire, shorter than corolla-tube. Corolla with tube elongate, subcylindric, somewhat saccate abaxially at base; limb bilabiate, the lips subequal, the adaxial lip erecto-patent to reflexed, the abaxial lip erecto-patent, spreading, scarcely exceeding adaxial lip, the basal palate not occluding mouth of tube; lobes entire. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous, free, included or somewhat exserted, the connective not dilated above anther; staminode minute with rudimen- tary anther. Style simple, erect; stigma scarcely emarginate, positioned at level of or somewhat below anthers of fertile stamens. Capsule ovoid to subglobose, somewhat emarginate, the walls thin, papyraceous, the septum erect, straight; loculi more or less equal, many-seeded, each loculus dehiscing by irregular ruptures forming 1 pore, opening from apex up to 0.3 distance to base. Seeds oblong-ovoid, more or less radially symmetrical, longitudinally cristate; hilum more or less basal; longitudinal ridges more or less discrete except at apex and base, somewhat thick, the interstitial areas often with longitudinal rows of tubercles or smaller ridges; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular, often with median papilla, smooth or rugulate over papilla; epicuticular waxes absent.
