Pseudorontium - Taxonomy

 

 

Pseudorontium (A. Gray) Rothm., Feddes Repert. 52: 33 (1943). Annual herbs; stems homomorphic, erect, the branches not cirrhous. Leaves homomorphic, simple, ovate or rhombate to suborbicular, entire, pinnately veined, the midrib terminating in minute gland, petiolate, opposite below to alternate above; petiole not cirrhous. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate, in terminal, leafy racemes. Floral leaves not subtending additional branches. Pedicels strongly recurved in fruit, not cirrhous. Calyx deeply divided, the lobes more or less equal, valvate, shorter than corolla-tube. Corolla with tube more or less cylindrical, scarcely gibbous abaxially at base; limb bilabiate, the lips subequal, the adaxial lip erecto-patent or patent, the abaxial lip erecto-patent, somewhat exceeding adaxial lip, the basa1 palate more or less occluding throat; lobes entire. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous, included; connective not dilated above anthers; adjacent pairs of anthers marginally coherent; staminode conspicuous, with rudimentary anther. Style erect, simple; stigma linear or somewhat clavate, entire, positioned between anthers of fertile stamens. Capsule globose, the walls thin, papery, the septum erect, straight; loculi more or less equal, many-seeded, each loculus dehiscing by irregular valves forming 1 pore, opening from apex more or less to base. Seeds cyathiform, dorsi-ventrally asymmetrical; hilum subbasal on dorsal face; dorsal face convex, elongate with longitudinal ridges or rows of tubercles, the outermost ridge conspicuously dentate; ventral face cyathiform with prominent inrolled, scarcely emarginate wing; periclinal wall of testa-cells from interstices and base of ridges with median papilla; epicuticular waxes present, granulate.
