Maurandya Ortega, Hort. Matrit. Descr. l(2): 21 (1797). Perennial, suffrutescent herbs; stems homomorphic, climbing by means of twining petioles and pedicels. Leaves more or less homomorphic, deltate or rarely 5-lobed, otherwise entire, palmately veined, petiolate, alternate; petioles twining. Flowers somewhat zygomorphic, ped- icellate, solitary in leaf-axils. Floral leaves not subtending additional branches. Pedicels twin- ing, becoming deflexed distally in fruit. Calyx deeply divided, the lobes unequal, entire, valvate or somewhat imbricate, shorter than corolla-tube; adaxial lobe exceeding the 2 median lobes; median lobes exceeding 2 abaxial lobes. Corolla with tube broad, somewhat dorsi-ventrally compressed with 2 longitudinal abaxial folds, subgibbous abaxially at base; limb somewhat unequally 2-lipped, the adaxial lip erecto-patent, the abaxial lip more or less erect, exceeding adaxial, subglabrous in mouth of tube, without basal palate; lobes entire or somewhat emargi- nate. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous with adjacent pairs of anthers coherent, included, the connective not dilated above anthers; staminode minute, with rudimentary anther. Style erect, undivided, terete; stigma linear, entire, positioned between anthers of fertile stamens. Capsule oblong-globose to oblong-ovoid, the walls somewhat papery, the septum erect; loculi more or less equal, many-seeded, the dehiscence synchronous, each loculus opening by irregular teeth from apex forming 1pore, eventually rupturing more or less to base. Seeds oblong to oblong- ovoid, radially symmetrical, tuberculate; hilum more or less basal; tubercles broad and corky, occasionally anastomosed into short, irregular ridges; periclinal wall of testa-cells usually with median papilla or hair-papilla; epicuticular waxes absent.
