Perennial suffrutescent herbs; stems homomorphic, climbing by means of twining petioles. Leaves homomorphic, cordate to deltate, irregularly mucronate-dentate or subentire with minute teeth, palmately veined, the midrib not terminated with gland, petiolate, alternate; petioles cirrhous at base. Flowers subactinomorphic, pedicellate, solitary in leaf-axils. Floral leaves not subtending additional branches. Pedicels pendent, not cirrhous. Calyx broadly infundibuliform or campanulate, somewhat inflated, shallowly divided, brightly coloured with pink or purple, shorter than corolla-tube, the lobes entire, equal, valvate. Corolla with tube broad, terete or somewhat 5-sided with 4 shallow longitudinal folds, entire abaxially at base; limb scarcely bilabiate, the lips subequal, erecto-patent to scarcely recurved, the adaxial lip scarcely shorter than abaxial; lobes entire. Fertile stamens 4, subequal, free, exserted or included, the connective not dilated above anther; staminode small, with rudimentary anther. Style undivided, erect; stigma linear, entire, somewhat exceeding stamens. Capsule oblong-globose, the walls papery, the septum erect, straight; loculi equal, many-seeded, dehiscing more or less simultaneously, each loculus opening by severa1 irregular valves forming 1 pore, eventually rupturing from apex more or less to base. Seeds oblong-orbicular with 2 longitudinal wings, dorsi-ventrally subsymmetrical, the body tuberculate; hilum subbasal, between wings; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular, that of cells from interstices and sides of tubercles with median papilla; epicuticular waxes absent.
