Schweinfurthia - Taxonomy

 

 

Schweinfurthia A. Braun, Monatsber. Konigl. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin 1866: 875 (1867). Annual herbs or suffrutescent perennials; stems homomorphic, prostrate to erect, the branches not cirrhous. Leaves homomorphic, simple, entire, pinnately veined, petiolate or subsessile, the lowermost opposite, alternate above; petioles not cirrhous. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate, in lax racemes or solitary in leaf-axils. Bracts or floral leaves occasionally subtending additional axillary branches, the branches not cirrhous. Pedicels not cirrhous. Calyx deeply divided, the lobes entire, imbricate, scarcely accrescent, unequal; adaxial lobe exceeding and overlapping the four lateral lobes, usually exceeding corolla-tube; 2 abaxial lobes usually exceeding and overlapping 2 median lobes, usually shorter than corolla-tube. Corolla with tube more or less cylindrical, ecalcarate, gibbous abaxially at base; limb bilabiate, the lips more or less equal, the adaxial lip reflexed, the abaxial lip spreading with a conspicuous palate occluding mouth of tube. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous, the adjacent pairs of anthers marginally coherent, the con- nective not dilated above anther; staminode minute. Style simple erect; stigma capitate, entire, 1 positioned between anthers of fertile stamens. Capsule globose, the walls papyraceous, the septum oblique, more or less straight; loculi very unequal, the adaxial loculus small, few- seeded, indehiscent, the abaxial loculus large, many-seeded, dehiscing by a solitary pore, initiated by a transverse split near the base, then becoming divided into severa1 broad valves and eventually rupturing irregularly. Seeds more or less radially symmetrical, usually oblong-ovoid to somewhat conical, truncate, cristate or tuberculate, blackish brown; hilum basal; longitudi-nal ridges (4-) 5-6 separated by irregularly anastomosed tubercles or low secondary ridges, rarely absent; periclinal wall of testa-cells from of interstices tabular-convex with wrinkled central papilla, that of cells from base of ridges with marginal papilla, that of cells from apices of ridges convex, without papilla, reticulate; epicuticular waxes present, granulate.
