Asarina Taxonomy Asarina Miller, Gard. Dict .ed. 7 (1759). Perennial suffrutescent herbs; stems homomorphic, the branches not cirrhous. Leaves homo morphic, simple, reniform to ovate-cordate, crenate-dentate or lobed, palmately veined, petiol ate, opposite; petioles not cirrhous. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate, solitary in leaf-axils. Floral leaves not subtending additional shoots. Pedicels becoming reflexed and thickened in fruit, not cirrhous. Calyx deeply divided, the lobes entire, more or less equal, valvate, shorter than corolla-tube. Corolla with tube broad, dorsi-ventrally compressed, shallowly canaliculate abaxially, subgibbous abaxially at base; limb bilabiate, the lips more or less equal, the adaxial lip erecto-patent, the abaxial lip with conspicuous bigibbous palate occluding mouth of tube; lobes entire. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous, the adjacent pairs marginally coherent, included, the connective not dilated above anther; staminode minute. Style simple, erect; stigma capitate, entire, positioned between anthers of fertile stamens. Capsule broadly ovoid to subglobose, the walls somewhat papery, the septum erect; loculi equal, many-seeded, dehiscing more or less simultaneously, each loculus opening by irregular valves forming solitary, toothed apical pore. Seeds narrowly ovoid to conical, more or less radially symmetrical, longitudinally cristate; hilum subbasal; ridges sinuate, broad, rounded, sometimes anastomosed, more or less con- tiguous; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular, that of cells of ridges without papilla, that of cells of interstices sometimes with small median papilla; epicuticular waxes absent.
