Perennial, suffrutescent herbs; stems homomorphic, forming clumps or mats of foliage. Leaves homomorphic, orbicular, spinulose-dentate, palmately veined, petiolate, alternate; petioles not twining. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate, solitary in leaf-axils. Floral leaves not subtending additional branches. Pedicels not twining, somewhat recurved in fruit. Calyx narrowly cam- panulate or somewhat urceolate, deeply divided, the lobes subequal with adaxial lobe scarcely exceeding 4 abaxial lobes, conspicuously spinulose-dentate, valvate or scarcely imbricate at base, shorter than corolla-tube. Corolla with tube broad, somewhat dorsi-ventrally compressed with 2 longitudinal abaxial folds, more or less entire abaxially at base; limb bilabiate, the lips subequal, the adaxial lip erecto-patent to scarcely recurved, the abaxial lip erecto-patent with palate poorly developed, partially occluding mouth of tube; lobes subequal, entire. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous, free, included, the connective conspicuously dilated above anther forming small flap; staminode minute with rudimentary anther. Style simple, erect, terete; stigma linear, entire, positioned between anthers of fertile stamens.
