Dwarf shrubs or annual or perennial herbs; stems homomorphic, prostrate to erect or climbing by means of twining petioles, the branches not cirrhous. Leaves heteromorphic or homomorphic, simple or sometimes deeply divided, linear to suborbicular, entire, dentate or lobed, hastate or sagittate, palmately veined, petiolate to subsessile, the petioles frequently twining, mostly alternate. Flowers zygomorphic, pedicellate, solitary in leaf-axils or in leafy racemes. Floral leaves or bracts not subtending additional branches. Pedicels not cirrhous or reflexed.
Calyx deeply divided, the lobes entire, more or less equal, imbricate, usually shorter than corolla-tube. Corolla with tube more or less cylindrical or somewhat campanulate, calcarate or rarely saccate abaxially at base; limb bilabiate, the lips subequal or unequal, the adaxial lip shorter than abaxial, erecto-patent to patent, the abaxial lip usually broad and spreading with low basal palate partially occluding mouth of tube; spur conical or cylindrical, usually conspicuous; lobes entire. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous, included, the anthers marginally coherent forming ring-like structure, the connective not dilated above anther; staminode minute. Style simple, erect; stigma capitate, entire, positioned through centre of ring of anthers. Capsule ovoid to subglobose, the walls coriaceous or papyraceous, the septum erect, more or less straight; loculi equal, many-seeded or rarely few-seeded with simultaneous dehiscence or occasionally unequal with abaxial loculus few-seeded, smaller and dehiscing after adaxial loculus or rarely indehiscent. Seeds ellipsoid, bilaterally symmetrical to more or less radially symmetrical, reniform or ovoid; hilum median or rarely more or less basal; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular, tabular-convex or rarely convex, usually with median papilla; epicuticular waxes absent.
