Leaves homomorphic, orbicular to reniform, crenate, dentate or somewhat palmatisect to subentire, palmately veined, petiolate, alternate; petioles not cirrhous. Flowers somewhat zygomorphic, pedicellate, solitary in leaf-axils; pedicels more or less horizontally oriented in flower, recumed or tortuous in fruit but not cirrhous. Calyx narrowly infundibuliform or urceolate, not inflated, usually deeply divided, the lobes subequal, entire, valvate or scarcely imbricate. Corolla with tube narrowly infundibuliform to somewhat urceolate, somewhat dorsi-ventrally compressed with 2 prominent longitudinal abaxial folds, each usually with line of hairs internally, not gibbous abaxially at base; limb subequally 2-lipped, the adaxial lip erecto-patent or somewhat recurved, the abaxial lip erecto-patent to patent, somewhat exceeding adaxial, without basal palate; lobes entire. Fertile stamens 4, didynamous with anthers free, included or exserted, the connective not dilated above anther; staminode usually small with rudimentary anther, the filament rarely subequalling that of fertile stamens. Style erect, simple; stigma linear, entire or scarcely emarginate, positioned between anthers of fertile stamens or exceeding starnens. Capsule broadly ovoid to subglobose, the walls papery, the septum erect, straight; loculi more or less equal, many-seeded, with synchronous dehiscence, each loculus opening from apex by several irregular valves forming 1 pore, even- tually rupturing more or less to base. Seeds more or less radially symmetrical, tuberculate or longitudinally cristate; hilum more or less basal; periclinal wall of testa-cells tabular or tabular- concave, that of cells from interstices or sides of tubercles or ridges usually with median papilla or hair-papilla; epicuticular waxes absent.
